Forget tomato juice. All that does is make the dog and the whole five mile radius of your house stink. Veterinarian Gary Ryder suggests 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 tablespoon dish soap such as Dawn. Allow the mixture to rest on your dog ten to fifteen minutes. The dish soap is important to breaking down a skunk’s oil based spray. Even if the pet got sprayed in the eye, simply rinse it out with saline solution or artifrical eye wash. It doesn’t hurt to go ahead and rinse your pets mouth out with water. Pale gums, labored breathing, suggest the pet has anaphylactic (allergy) reaction that could turn fatal. Skunks like to wander around twilight, dusk, and dawn; so a change in a dog’s walking routine is the best way to avoid from being skunked. (Lisa Boone, The Times Union, 2017)
